20 Hook Triggers To get in Viewer’s Mind.

Hey there!

Ever wonder why some reels get millions of views while yours barely crack 100? It’s not luck—it’s psychology. Today, I’m breaking down 20 hook triggers that hijack your viewer’s brain and force them to stop scrolling.

Let’s dive in.

INFORMATION GAP HOOKS

1. “This is ____ (a person, place, or thing)”

Creates immediate curiosity because you’re introducing something undefined. The viewer’s brain needs closure, so they stick around to find out who/what it is.

Example: “This is the app that got me 50K followers in 30 days.”

2. “One of my favorite (X) is (Y)”

Builds intrigue around your personal choice. People want to know why it’s your favorite and whether they should try it too—classic social proof at work.

Example: “One of my favorite productivity hacks is the 2-minute rule—here’s why it changed everything.”

3. “I’ve been thinking a lot about (X)”

Feels conversational and personal, like you’re letting the viewer in on your thought process. But they need to keep watching to learn what you discovered.

Example: “I’ve been thinking a lot about why most people fail at content creation—and it’s not what you think.”

4. “Today I did something crazy…”

Gives just enough context to spark a “what happened next?” question. The unusual motive or action creates pattern interruption that stops the scroll.

Example: “Today I deleted all my social media apps for 7 days… and here’s what happened to my mental health.”

5. “This is the real reason (X) turned into (Y)”

Suggests there’s a hidden cause that people haven’t heard before. Satisfies curiosity while promising a surprising twist that makes viewers feel “in the know.”

Example: “This is the real reason Instagram changed its algorithm—and it has nothing to do with engagement.”

UNEXPECTED CHANGE HOOKS

6. “It all started when (X happened) which led to (Y)”

Feels like the beginning of a story. People stay because they want to see how one unexpected event led to another—our brains are wired for narrative.

Example: “It all started when I got fired from my 9-5, which led to building a six-figure online business.”

7. “When I was young I did (X), until I learned (Y)”

Combines nostalgia with a lesson. The audience wants to know what changed your thinking and whether they’re making the same mistake.

Example: “When I was young I chased perfection in every video, until I learned that consistency beats quality every single time.”

8. “The moment I stopped caring about (X) was the moment (Y) finally happened”

Reverses expectations. Suggests letting go can produce results, which is counterintuitive and intriguing—classic pattern interruption.

Example: “The moment I stopped caring about going viral was the moment my content actually started blowing up.”

9. “I thought I’d never get past (X). But because of (Y) – it was easy”

Offers hope by showing a simpler solution to a problem people assume is difficult. This triggers relief and possibility in the viewer’s mind.

Example: “I thought I’d never get past 1000 followers. But because of hook triggers—it was easy to hit 10K in 60 days.”

10. “I used to think (X) was hard, until I learned (Y)”

Signals an “easy way” discovery. Audiences want the shortcut you found because everyone wants to work smarter, not harder.

Example: “I used to think editing reels took hours, until I learned this 15-minute template formula.”

RELATABILITY HOOKS

11. “If you’re like me and (relatable struggle), this is for you”

Fosters instant connection by making the audience feel seen and understood. When people see themselves in your content, they stay.

Example: “If you’re like me and hate waking up at 5 AM for ‘productivity,’ this realistic morning routine is for you.”

12. “Everyone talks about (X), but no one mentions (Y)”

Points out a gap in common advice. Makes viewers feel like they’re about to get insider knowledge that others are missing.

Example: “Everyone talks about posting consistently, but no one mentions that timing matters more than frequency.”

13. “This happens to me every single time I (common situation)”

Creates a shared experience moment. When viewers recognize their own behavior, they comment, share, and tag friends.

Example: “This happens to me every single time I try to film a reel—my brain completely forgets how to speak.”

14. “Stop doing (X) if you want (Y)”

Addresses behaviors to avoid. Adds value by helping the audience course-correct, which feels protective and mentor-like.

Example: “Stop posting at random times if you want consistent views—here’s when your audience is actually online.”

15. “Here’s what nobody tells you about (X)”

Feels like uncovering a secret. People love feeling like they’re getting behind-the-scenes truth that “experts” don’t share.

Example: “Here’s what nobody tells you about going full-time as a creator—you’ll work more hours, not less.”

TRANSFORMATION & OUTCOME HOOKS

16. “Give me 3 minutes and you’ll be the smartest person in the room about (X)”

Promises immediate, tangible value with a specific timeframe. Taps into aspirational identity—everyone wants to be the expert.

Example: “Give me 3 minutes and you’ll be the smartest person in the room about Instagram’s algorithm.”

17. “This is how I went from (X) to (Y) in (timeframe)”

Shows a dramatic before-and-after journey. Viewers stay because they want a repeatable roadmap for themselves.

Example: “This is how I went from 200 views per reel to 50K views in 30 days—no ads, no luck, just strategy.”

18. “I tried (X) for (Y) days—here’s what happened”

Leverages curiosity and relatability by documenting personal experiments. Builds credibility while keeping viewers eager to see results.

Example: “I tried posting 3 reels a day for 30 days—here’s what happened to my follower count.”

19. “Watch this if you want to (achieve specific outcome)”

Appeals directly to viewers’ aspirations or pain points. Makes it difficult to ignore because it promises exactly what they’re looking for.

Example: “Watch this if you want to gain 1000 real followers this month without buying ads.”

20. “The fastest way to (X) without (common obstacle)”

Removes the biggest objection or barrier. Positions your content as the solution that eliminates struggle—pure dopamine for problem-solvers.

Example: “The fastest way to edit professional reels without spending hours learning complicated software.”

Why These Work (The Science)

These hooks target System 1 thinking—the fast, emotional, automatic part of our brain. When someone scrolls, they’re in autopilot mode making split-second decisions. Your hook needs to trigger one of three psychological drivers :

Curiosity – Creates an information gap the brain desperately wants to close
Emotion – Sparks joy, surprise, frustration, or hope that sticks in memory
Social Proof – Makes people feel they’ll be left out if they don’t engage

When you combine these triggers with relatability or transformation, you create content that doesn’t just stop the scroll—it makes people need to watch until the end.

Your Turn

Pick 3 of these hooks and test them in your next reels. Track which ones get the highest watch time and engagement. Then double down on what works for your specific audience.

The secret isn’t using every hook—it’s mastering the ones that resonate with your people.
